The word “Aerotropolis” is a combination of 2 terms: “Aero” (air) and “metropolis”. A metro-polis refers to a large city or urban area while “polis” means city⁸ in Greek. Loosely translated an Aerotropolis then refers to a large air(port) city as reflected in the following “simple” definitions:
• “a city that has an airport at its centre and has developed around it”
• “a new form of airport-centric commercial development”
• “The airport city is at the core of the aerotropolis, a new urban form evolving around many major airports”
• “an airport centric development.
• “The concept of the aerotropolis, as urban design centred around an aviation hub”
• “a catch-all definition is airport centric urban development”
A Fixed Base Operator (FBO) is an organization granted the right by an airport to operate at the airport. The FBO provides services such as fueling, hangar facilities, tie-down and parking, aircraft rental, aircraft maintenance, and flight instruction. An FBO caters specifically to private and charter flights
Aeronautical Revenue is revenue from all regulated charges levied at the Airport; i.e. Landing Fees, Aircraft Parking Fees, Passenger Service Charges, Facilitation Fees, Cargo & Ground Handling Fees, CUTE Services and User Department fees
Navigational Aids are a form of marker, signal or device that aids an aircraft by guiding and navigating it to its destination. It can be in the form of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) or Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Range (DVOR).
Airport Digitization relates to the ongoing digital transformation of airports in order to achieve the envisaged concepts of “a connected traveller”; “the smart airport”; “the self-service airport”; the potential for in-terminal “location-based services”; “management process visualisation”; and “collaborative decision-making”.

MRO stands for maintenance, repair and overhaul. Aviation MRO refers to the specific repair, service or inspection of an aircraft. The practice encompasses that of all maintenance activities done to ensure the safety and airworthiness of an air transport vehicle.
Non-aeronautical revenues comprise commercial revenues from sources such as Property Rentals/Leasing, Property Development, Land leases, Retail & Duty Free Shopping, Advertising, Car-Parking fees, and other commercial activities
Ground handling" refers to the wide range of services provided to facilitate an aircraft flight or aircraft ground repositioning, preparation for and upon conclusion of a flight which will include both customer service and ramp service functions.
The Airport Master Plan is the ultimate development plan for an airport and serves as a guideline for development, by providing an indication of the expansion required to meet the aviation and non-aviation needs of the respective regions. The horizon of the plan is categorized into short, intermediate, and long-term development goals of the Airport.
