The word “Aerotropolis” is a combination of 2 terms: “Aero” (air) and “metropolis”. A metro-polis refers to a large city or urban area while “polis” means city⁸ in Greek. Loosely translated an Aerotropolis then refers to a large air(port) city as reflected in the following “simple” definitions:
• “a city that has an airport at its centre and has developed around it”
• “a new form of airport-centric commercial development”
• “The airport city is at the core of the aerotropolis, a new urban form evolving around many major airports”
• “an airport centric development.
• “The concept of the aerotropolis, as urban design centred around an aviation hub”
• “a catch-all definition is airport centric urban development”

The Aerotropolis consists of an airport city and outlying corridors and clusters of aviation-linked businesses and associated residential development that feed off each other and their accessibility to the airport
